Chapter Five

Muyiwa liked school. He was stressed, and confused even about the things that normally didn’t confuse the new students. But he was in school, just like his siblings, only with more freedom than they had at the moment.

For him, the best thing that had happened so far was being put in the same room as Michael. He couldn’t ask for a better roommate. Michael was one of those people that had no interest in your personal life outside school, like details about family or even high school life, which made it easier on Muyiwa. Also, Michael was studying the same course as he was, so they went for classes and did their registration together. Michael was also a very social person who knew how to balance work and play. It was rare for him to miss classes, but it was rarer for him to miss a party he was invited to. Muyiwa could never understand where he got the energy from.

Michael also loved to gym. He had a couple of gym buddies he worked out and also went to parties with. Since Muyiwa had turned down every party he had invited him to he decided to get him to start going to the gym with him.

“Muyiwa let’s go to the gym.” He said one Friday night, staring at his roommate typing away on his laptop. Muyiwa turned to look at him, with an eyebrow raised.

“You want to me to follow you to go and be making noise with those your guys shey?” he said, turning his attention back to his laptop. “I don’t have time for that abeg.”

“Guy… you never have time for anything.”

“Don’t we hang out?”

“Yeah. You hang with friends agreed but after that fresher’s party you have refused to go to any other party inside or outside school.”

Muyiwa let his mind wander to the memory of that day. The party was for all the first year students that were admitted that year, a week to their matriculation day. He had gone with Michael, but had lost him in the crowd of dancing students. He was very claustrophobic so he found a corner away from the dancers and sat down, nursing a drink that Michael had put into his hand. He looked at label and tried to use the dim lights of the room to read. Smirnoff Ice.

“Is anyone sitting here?”

His eyes moved from the long legs standing in front of him to the face of the tall girl in a very short dress wearing a huge from on her face. He shook his head in response. She let out a frustrated sigh and dropped to the seat before letting out another sigh. Muyiwa didn’t care, but he didn’t know when he asked.

“Are… you okay?”

Without warning the girl launched into a lengthy rant about how her twin brother was trampling on her fun in school and not letting her dance with the other guys and how she deserved respect and privacy especially since she was the older twin and how she wasn’t enjoying herself at all. Muyiwa listened to her, trying to hide the awkward expression trying to creep up to his face. Suddenly it became darker. A tall guy that looked just like the girl ranting to him stood in front of them with his arms folded. He was swaying slightly, and Muyiwa’s sensitive smell picked up a whiff of alcohol on his breath. He was most likely intoxicated.

“What’re you doing with my sister?” he said in an angry voice. Muyiwa gave him a once over.

“Do you see me doing anything?” Muyiwa said, slightly irritated. He wasn’t going to let a complete stranger ruin his mood. He decided to go somewhere else, but as he got up to leave the girl’s twin shoved him unexpectedly, making him almost fall back into his seat. Something in his head snapped. A shove didn’t respond well to him. It set his body in motion for a fight— it was the way he was programmed. If he was shoved five times within half a minute he could turn very deadly, not stopping till he sees blood. But if shoved three times within a minute (even if conveniently spaced) he would be less provoked, but still triggered to injure a person. He straightened himself up and tried to move past the guy again. As soon as he noticed his hand moving towards him again he grabbed him by the wrist and turned to glare at him.

“Don’t be rude.”

It took him all his willpower not to fracture the guy’s wrist, but the accident with Richard taught him to be conscious of how damaging even the most subtle of actions could be. He stormed out of the party not looking back at the terrified guy who was holding his hurting wrist. He was obviously stronger than anticipated, even though they had no idea how strong. It was then he decided to avoid parties; this kind of occurrence might present itself again in another form. It was most likely that you would find yourself in a situation with a drunken guy sporting for a fight at a party than everyone else.

“I’m not a party person… it’s no sin.” Muyiwa said with a shrug.

“Okay okay I’ve heard— you don’t like parties. But there’s nothing wrong with pumping up at the gym.” Michael said with a laugh, jumping off his bed so he could flex his muscles conveniently. “Your muscles are too lean. All those babes will be passing you by.”

“I have my six pack abs— that’s enough for me.” Muyiwa said after a long laugh. “Besides I thought girls were scared of men that are too ripped.”

“I pray.” Michael said, flexing his muscles some more. “Just come over this Saturday… nobody is begging you to lift the crazy stuff. I mean, it’s obvious you work out from time to time so it’s not like the gym is foreign to you,”

Muyiwa let out a knowing chuckle and agreed to go with Michael.

The campus gym was more than a place to train and keep fit for some. It was like a fad of some sort for others; a symbol representing a certain type of group of men, an addictive activity that has forged itself not only into a lifestyle, but a culture of some sort. Michael belonged to this particular sect of people on campus. They were all party animals and were usually loud when they were around each other, something that didn’t appeal to Muyiwa. But he knew that if he didn’t agree he wasn’t going to hear the last of it.

He walked in with his roommate to the gym, impressed by the facilities it was stocked with. As soon as the others set their eyes on Michael they bellowed a loud greeting, and Muyiwa tried his best not to roll his eyes. The greetings stopped as soon as his roommate put an arm around his shoulder. His eyes had a mischievous glint in them all of a sudden.

“You remember my roommate Muyiwa right?” he asked them.

“Nope.” One said.

“Not really.” Said another.

Muyiwa turned to look at Michael and spoke in a hoarse whisper. “Who cares if they know who I am? I thought we came here to work out.”

“Chill… I’m just trying to be friendly.”

After that the boys talked among themselves as they started to warm up, but none of them tried to make conversation with Muyiwa. Michael severally tried to rope them into their discussions, but stopped when he discovered Muyiwa was just as uninterested in them as they were in him.

Muyiwa scanned all the equipment and let out a sigh. He was going to have to spend the day pretending that the weights heavy. He moved towards an equipment and tested it with his palm.

“Too easy.” He muttered. “But I guess it’ll have to do.”

“Muyiwa you wan kill yourself?” Michael said with a laugh, walking up to him. “That’s some heavy equipment, even for me!”

Muyiwa resisted the urge to burst out laughing while concealing it with what seemed to them like a nervous chuckle. They were a joke to him. The others seemed to get a kick out of him picking out the equipment he did, and one of them dared to ask. “Dude why are you even here?”

Muyiwa resisted the urge to laugh harder. “Michael I’m out of here.”

“Haba Muyiwa don’t be angry.”

“I swear I’m not! I just don’t see the need to be here.”

Michael turned to look at his gym buddies, then his roommate. “If you can beat me in arm wrestling, I’ll let you go.”

Muyiwa shrugged nonchalantly. “Sure.”

The others started to murmur and Michael stared at his placid looking roommate in confusion. If he wanted to leave why would he agree to something he would surely lose?

“Abeg let me wrestle your friend. I promise to go easy on him.” One of the guys said with a laugh. Muyiwa looked at him intently. He seemed to be the burliest of the lot.

“Is he the strongest of you guys?” Muyiwa blurted out before he could stop himself. Michael looked at him in surprise. He had never heard his roommate use such an audacious tone.

“Muyiwa don’t worry you can go. I’ll see you in the room.”

“Na wa o Michael. You just want to spoil the fun for all of us.” Another said with a laugh, looking straight at Muyiwa as he spoke. “Or you’re not having fun?”

Muyiwa gave him a dismissive look. “Let’s just get this over with.”

The boys laughed as Muyiwa and his challenger propped their elbows in place. Michael on the other hand, was very uneasy as he stepped forward to signal them to start.

“One… two… go!”

Muyiwa had to pretend that he was straining to resist the guy’s arm, but he had no intention of losing. In a few minutes, he had won all of them in arm wrestling, Michael included.

After that Muyiwa was officially in, even without hanging out with them regularly as required. He only went to the gym or anywhere else with them once in a while, but it did nothing to change his membership status. They hollered “strongest” whenever they saw him, and invited him for parties and other hangouts. Muyiwa didn’t like the hollering, but he had to admit that he secretly liked the attention being among the guys was getting him. He knew he should be worried that someone might find it odd that a guy with his build was famed for beating big burly guys at arm wrestling, but he had done with he did, he couldn’t erase the memory.

“So Muyiwa… there’s a party outside school this Saturday, and I was asked to tell you that you have to be there.”  Michael said casually one day after class. Muyiwa gave him a look.

“You know how I feel about parties Michael.”

“Guy… just because these guys don’t bother you about not hanging with them doesn’t really mean you’re in the clear o.” Michael warned. “They could be very shallow minded… they might start taking you refusal to hang most of the time as you putting them down or something.”

Why do you even hang with these guys Michael?

Muyiwa sighed and before he knew it, Saturday came and he was at a house party wishing he was playing video games instead. In a couple of hours he was staring at a bunch of drunken guys and girls dancing and messing around. He chuckled and shook his head, briefly remembering being given two 25 liter kegs of pure ogogoro by the scientists. His belly hurt from being forced to take that many fluids, but nothing happened. It didn’t even burn after the first cup that went down his throat. He couldn’t get drunk even if he tried.

“Strongest! You having fun?!” Michael said, laughing uncontrollably. Muyiwa looked at all of them worriedly. Every one of them was drunk— hopefully they weren’t going anywhere till the next morning. He stared pensively at his roommate as he staggered back to where people were dancing, snapping out of his reverie when he felt a soft tap on his shoulder.

“Hello…”

A girl stood behind him, smiling uncomfortably. She looked very self conscious in the short dress she was wearing, and her eye makeup was a little smudged. She smiled at him.

“Muyiwa right? You don’t know me?”

Muyiwa peered at her and tried to see if she looked familiar. He took in her scent and thought hard. It was very familiar… like one he had picked up from class. Scents were important to him and his siblings. It’s the first thing they register about an individual; even changing ones perfume couldn’t prevent them from picking it up.

“I’m your course mate Ronke.” She said in a small voice. “We normally don’t talk but it’s so nice to see a familiar face that isn’t drunk at this party.”

Muyiwa chuckled and she smiled back before attempting to take a sip out of her drink. Muyiwa’s face changed and he gently took the bottle from her hand.

“Where did you get that?” he asked her heatedly. She stared at him in confusion.

“One of my girls gave it to me. Why?”

Muyiwa didn’t answer the question. “Mind if I take a sip?”

She was still confused, but she shrugged nonchalantly and let him. He took a sip and his eyes lit up. He was right. The scent he caught was coming from her drink. There was some sort of drug in it. Muyiwa shook his head and grabbed her arm.

“Did you mix this with anything?” Ronke shook her head and he smiled. “I figured. Then let’s get you another drink.”

“Actually I don’t think I want another drink… I just want to go outside.”

Muyiwa followed her outside, and they stood by the door talking and enjoying the fresh air.

“I don’t get why we’ve never talked before.” She finally said, looking away from him. “What are you even doing here anyway? This doesn’t seem like a place you’d normally be.”

“I was about to ask you the same thing.”

She gave a self conscious laugh before answering. “My friends thought a party was the best way for me to get over my breakup.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah… I’ve been really pathetic this past week since I got dumped, and everyone was sick of It.” she said with a shrug. “Who could blame them? I was getting sick of me too.”

“Let’s take a stroll or something.” He said to her with a smile. She looked down at her dress uneasily, and then nodded. “Don’t worry… no one can harass you if you’re with me.”

They walked down the street with her wearing Muyiwa’s jacket, which made her feel less self conscious. Soon Muyiwa stopped in his tracks. They were standing under an unlit streetlight.

“Someone’s been following us with their car.”

Just then a pair of headlights flashed at them briefly. Ronke unconsciously grabbed on to Muyiwa and the guy in the car came out.

“So this is what you do ehn? Jump around from one man to another!”

Muyiwa looked at Ronke. “Who’s that?”

“My boyfriend. He does this all the time. He’d dump me, and then get angry when he sees me with another guy and start claiming me all over again.” Ronke said with a shiver. Muyiwa looked at the fair guy clenching his fist. He had had a lot to drink, but he wasn’t drunk yet. The guy glared at them before getting back into the car.

The next thing that happened took the both of them by surprise. He drove straight at them without warning!

Muyiwa didn’t know what to do. So he let instinct take over and he pulled Ronke close to him and backed the car, letting the car smash into him and protecting her at the same time. He could hear the front of the car smash into his back, but he was fine. He pushed the car off him and turned to look at the guy in the car. He had passed out. The front of the car had a narrow dent in front that could be blamed on the streetlight. He and Ronke walked out of the wreckage and she turned to look at him in shock.

“You’re unharmed! That’s impossible!” she said, her knees giving way underneath her. Muyiwa ran to pick her up, but she flinched when he came close.

“Ronke I can explain—”

“See the damage! You’re not supposed to be standing!” she said, trembling visibly. “Do you use jazz or something?! Please don’t touch me!”

“Let me take you back to the party at least. People are already coming out of their houses.” He said after a moment of defeat. She agreed and he carried her bridal style back to the party as fast as he could before anyone could notice, let alone identify them. When they got back in he put her down on the front steps.

“Ronke… I saved your life. For that reason alone, please don’t tell anyone about this. I beg of you.” Muyiwa said, his eyes pleading. When she didn’t answer he went back in and let her to stew in her thoughts, amazed and at the same time terrified at what she had experienced that night.

  2. This chapter leaves me to wonder what would have happen if Ronke’s Boyfriend didnt pass out after the crash that its only the car that dented but Muyiwa Remains unaffected. I picture the Bf getting out of his vehicle and running olympic style faster than Hussien Bolt towards the opposite direction, or thats what i’d do if i were him cause whoever might survive my car hit will beat me perplex hence the logical decision to take to heel for dear life….
